St. Joseph’s College, Layibi ranked 134th at the national level according to the released Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results should not be compared with private schools. Layibi College is the only secondary school in Acholi sub-region which selects only first-grade pupils to have a chance to study in the great college at Ordinary level and they are eliminated in the course of their four years studies due to their poor academic results and discipline. St. Joseph’s College, Layibi had a total of 122 candidates who sat for the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education, UCE which is examined by Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) and they got 99 first grade, 21 second grade and 2 third grade.
Ocer Campion Jesuit College and St. Joseph’s College, Layibi topping the list of the best performing secondary schools means that Gulu has the best education facility but the beauty if this scenario, most of the students come from Kitgum district and Municipality. Pader’s finest Archbishop Flynn Secondary School comes in the third position with 78 students in Division One and Amuru was well represented by Restore Leadership in the 6th position.
There were three schools from Kitgum in the top ten lists and these includes: Rev. Jabuloni Issoke, fifth with 53 students in Division One, Kitgum Comprehensive (Main), 7th with 44 in Division One, and Y.Y Okot Memorial College, 9th with 34 students in in Division One.
Other UCE best performing remaining schools in Acholi sub-region were from Gulu namely; St. John Paul II, 4th with 53 students in in Division One, Sacred Heart Girl Secondary School, 8th with 34 students in in Division One and Gulu Senior Secondary School, 10th with 26 students in in Division One.
Out of the 8 districts in Acholi sub-region, only schools from Gulu, Kitgum, Pader and Amuru appear in the top ten UCE best performing schools while Lamwo, Nwoya, Agago and Omoro district lags behind meaning most of the pupils who sit for their Primary Leaving Examinations either don’t finish their Ordinary Level or don’t perform best in their home school.
The 2023 shows that traditional schools and government schools needs to be supported as the list is dominated by private schools who are paying their teachers well and provide practical skills to their learners
